The First Visit: Earlier Than You Think

Most parents assume a child's first dental visit should wait until they have a full set of teeth — or until something hurts. The reality is different: we recommend the first appointment by age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing.

Early visits aren't about treatment. They're about getting your child comfortable with the environment, building trust with their dentist, and catching any early issues before they become painful problems.

Why Dental Anxiety Starts Young

Dental anxiety is one of the most common phobias in adults — and almost always traces back to a difficult childhood experience. Our children's dentistry team at Bite Dental is specifically trained in paediatric behaviour management. We use techniques like:

  • Tell-Show-Do: We explain what we're going to do in child-friendly language, show them the tools on a finger first, and then gently proceed
  • Distraction: Stories, counting, and praise throughout the appointment
  • Positive reinforcement: Stickers, high-fives, and genuine celebration of brave behaviour
  • No surprises: We never rush, and we always warn before touching

The goal is for every child to leave our clinic thinking: "that wasn't bad at all."

How to Prepare Your Child at Home

Before age 3:

  • Play "dentist" at home — take turns checking each other's teeth with a torch
  • Read age-appropriate books about dentist visits ("The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist" is a classic)
  • Never use the dentist as a threat ("If you don't brush, the dentist will hurt you")

For older children:

  • Be honest but calm: "The dentist checks your teeth to keep them healthy and strong"
  • Let them bring a favourite toy or comfort item
  • Avoid sharing your own dental anxiety — children pick up on parental nervousness
  • Arrive 10 minutes early so they can explore the waiting area and feel settled

What Actually Happens at a Kids' Check-Up

A typical first visit at our Gurugram or Delhi clinic lasts about 30-40 minutes:

  1. Welcome & play: A few minutes for your child to get comfortable in the chair — no pressure
  2. Count the teeth: We count teeth together, making it fun
  3. Gentle clean: A quick polish with child-safe flavoured toothpaste (strawberry is always a hit)
  4. Fluoride varnish: A 30-second application that protects against cavities for months
  5. X-rays (if age-appropriate and needed): Digital, low-radiation, and quick
  6. Parent debrief: We walk you through what we saw, your child's brushing habits, and dietary advice

Common Issues We Find in Young Children

  • Early cavities in milk teeth — yes, these need treatment even though they'll fall out eventually. A painful cavity in a milk tooth affects eating, speech, and can harm the developing permanent tooth beneath
  • Tongue tie — often missed at birth, can affect feeding and speech
  • Thumb-sucking effects on bite development
  • Overcrowding that may need early monitoring for future orthodontic planning

When to Book an Emergency Kids' Appointment

  • A tooth is knocked out or chipped in an accident (act fast — a knocked-out permanent tooth can often be reimplanted if you reach us within 60 minutes)
  • Swelling of the cheek or gum
  • Your child is in pain and unable to eat
  • You notice a dark spot on a tooth

Our Gurugram clinic (222, Sector 51) and West Delhi clinic (Meera Bagh) both have dedicated kids' chairs with ceiling TVs. Book a free first check-up today — there's no better gift you can give your child's future smile.
