A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged, decayed, cracked or root-canal treated tooth. It restores the tooth's original shape, strength and appearance. You may need a crown if your tooth is too damaged for a filling, has had a root canal, is cracked, or has been severely worn down. Your dentist will advise at your free consultation.

Zirconia crowns are 100% metal-free — they look the most natural, have no dark gum lines and are the longest-lasting option. PFM (Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal) crowns have a metal base with a porcelain top — they're very strong and more economical, making them ideal for back teeth or multi-unit cases. For visible front teeth, most patients prefer zirconia. We'll help you decide at your consultation based on your specific tooth, budget and expectations.

Traditional crown-making uses putty impressions — a thick material placed in a tray that sets in your mouth. These can distort, cause gagging, and produce impressions that are slightly inaccurate. At Bite Dental, we use a digital 3D scanner instead. A handheld wand maps your tooth in 60 seconds — no putty, no discomfort. The digital file goes straight to CAD design software where your crown is engineered with sub-millimetre precision. The result is a crown that fits far better, seals the tooth more effectively, lasts longer and is more comfortable from day one.

No. Crown preparation is done under local anaesthesia — you feel pressure but no pain during the procedure. A temporary crown is placed on the same day while your permanent crown is fabricated. When the permanent crown is fitted at the second appointment, it's cemented with minimal discomfort. Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the whole process is.

With our digital CAD/CAM workflow, zirconia crowns typically last 15–20 years or more. PFM crowns last 10–15 years. The key factor is marginal fit — the tighter the seal at the crown margin, the less chance of microleakage and secondary decay underneath, which is the most common reason crowns fail. Our digital process significantly improves fit compared to traditional methods.

Typically 2 appointments. Appointment 1: consultation, digital scan, tooth preparation, and placement of a temporary crown. Appointment 2 (7–10 days later): fitting and permanent cementation of your custom crown. Some complex cases or full-mouth rehabilitations may require additional visits for planning and provisionals, but your treatment timeline will be clearly explained upfront.
