Why Professional Whitening?

Strips and charcoal can't do this.

There's a significant difference between what you buy at a chemist and what we use in the clinic. Here's why it matters.

Feature OTC Strips / Charcoal / Whitening Toothpaste Professional Whitening at Bite Dental
Peroxide concentration Up to 6% (legal OTC limit in India) 35% prescription-grade hydrogen peroxide
Tray fit Generic — gel leaks onto gums Custom-fitted trays — precise, no gum contact
Sensitivity management No assessment, no support Pre-treatment assessment + desensitising gel
Gum protection None — can cause gum irritation Gum barrier applied before every session
Expected result 1–2 shades over several weeks Up to 8 shades — in 60 minutes
Longevity 2–4 weeks typically 12–24 months with maintenance
Charcoal toothpaste Abrasive — erodes enamel over time, no bleaching action Not used — we protect enamel, not scratch it
A note on charcoal toothpaste: It doesn't bleach teeth — it abrades them. The perceived whitening effect comes from scratching surface stains off enamel, which simultaneously thins it. Thinner enamel makes the yellower dentine beneath more visible over time. We see the results of prolonged charcoal use regularly in our clinic. Please stop.
Treatment Options

Two ways to a brighter smile.

In-chair for instant results, or home kit for flexibility — both use professional-grade whitening gel available only through dentists.

Rx 2 WEEKS PROFESSIONAL-GRADE HOME WHITENING KIT
Home Whitening Kit
We take impressions and fabricate custom-fitted trays that fit your teeth precisely. You wear them at home for 30–60 minutes daily for 2 weeks using prescription-strength whitening gel — the same grade not available OTC.
Custom-moulded trays — no leakage, no gum irritation
Professional-grade gel — far stronger than OTC strips
2-week protocol — 30–60 mins/day at home
4–6 shades lighter at end of protocol
Trays reusable for future top-up courses
₹4,500 – ₹6,000

Combine both for best long-term results

Many patients choose in-chair Zoom for the initial dramatic lift, then use a home kit for annual maintenance. The custom trays from your home kit can be reused for years — just top up with fresh gel. Ask us about the combination package at your shade assessment.

Is It Right For You?

Who benefits — and who to pause.

Whitening works brilliantly for most people. But there are a few situations where we'll be upfront and tell you to wait or consider alternatives.

✅ Great candidates for whitening

Heavy tea or coffee drinkers with surface and intrinsic staining
🚬Ex- or current tobacco users with yellowing from nicotine staining
🌿Naturally yellow teeth — genetics play a big role in natural tooth shade
💍Pre-wedding whitening — the most common timing for our patients
🦷Post-aligner brightening — after clear aligner treatment is complete
📸Pre-event, graduation photos, job interviews, content creation
🎂Age-related yellowing — teeth naturally darken over time

⚠️ Pause and talk to us first

🦷Crowns, veneers, or bonding in the smile zone — whitening won't change their colour. Restorations may need replacing post-whitening to match.
🤰Pregnant or breastfeeding — we follow the precautionary principle and advise postponing until after.
👶Under 16 years old — tooth pulps are still developing. Not recommended before 16.
😬Severe sensitivity or gum disease — needs to be treated first. We assess this at consultation.
💉Tetracycline / fluorosis staining — intrinsic grey/brown staining responds less predictably. We'll be honest about expected results before you proceed.
Is It Safe?

The honest answer on enamel safety.

There's a lot of confusion between bleaching and enamel erosion. They're completely different processes — and professional whitening, done correctly, causes neither enamel loss nor permanent damage.

Bleaching works by breaking down organic colour molecules (chromogens) within the enamel structure using hydrogen peroxide. It does not remove enamel. Erosion is caused by acid — from fizzy drinks, citrus, charcoal pastes — which chemically dissolves enamel over time.

Sensitivity is the most common side effect — it's temporary. The hydrogen peroxide temporarily makes enamel more porous, which can make teeth more reactive for 24–48 hours. We use potassium nitrate-based desensitising gel before and after every whitening session to minimise this.

Myths vs Facts
Myth Whitening destroys enamel.
Fact Professional hydrogen peroxide bleaching does not remove enamel. It oxidises colour molecules. Studies confirm no measurable enamel loss at clinical concentrations.
Myth Sensitivity means it's damaging your teeth.
Fact Temporary sensitivity is a physiological response to peroxide — not a sign of damage. It resolves within 24–48 hours. We manage it proactively with desensitising treatment.
Myth Charcoal is a natural, safe alternative.
Fact Charcoal is abrasive. It scratches surface stains off by physically grinding enamel. Over time, this thins enamel and makes teeth look more yellow, not less.
Shade Comparison

From A4 to B1. In one session.

The Vita shade guide is the universal standard dentists use to measure tooth colour. A4 is a common natural starting shade — yellow-orange. B1 is the lightest natural shade on the scale.

Before — Typical Starting Shade (A4) After — Target Shade (B1)
SHADE A4 — BEFORE 60 MIN ZOOM SHADE B1 — AFTER 8 SHADES LIGHTER

Vita shade comparison is illustrative. Individual results depend on baseline shade and tooth structure. Your exact result is assessed at the free shade consultation.

The Process

What happens at your appointment.

1
Consultation & Shade Mapping
We photograph your teeth and map your current shade on the Vita guide. We discuss your target shade, check for contraindications (crowns in smile zone, gum disease), and confirm you're a suitable candidate. All this is free.
2
Gum Protection
A liquid dental dam is applied to your gum tissue and set with a curing light — protecting your gums entirely from the whitening gel. This is what separates professional whitening from OTC strips that can cause gum burns.
3
Gel Application
Professional-grade hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied evenly across all visible teeth. The Zoom LED light is then positioned over your mouth — its blue light accelerates the peroxide's oxidation reaction.
4
Light Activation (3 × 15 min rounds)
The Zoom light activates the gel in three 15-minute cycles, with fresh gel applied between each round. You simply relax in the chair — many patients watch something on their phone. Total active time: approximately 45 minutes.
5
Desensitising Gel + Reveal
After the final round, we apply a potassium nitrate desensitising gel for 5 minutes to reduce post-treatment sensitivity. Then the retractor comes out, we rinse, and you see your result — the full shade change, right then and there.
Aftercare

Protect your investment.

The first 48 hours post-whitening are the most critical. Follow these guidelines and your results will last significantly longer.

🚫 The Whitening Diet (48 hrs post-treatment)

Avoid anything that would stain a white shirt:
Coffee & tea — even with milk
🍷Red wine & dark-coloured drinks
🫐Berries — blueberries, pomegranate, cherries
🌿Turmeric, saffron, beetroot
🍅Tomato sauce, soy sauce, balsamic
🚬Tobacco — smoking or chewing
Stick to: water, milk, white rice, chicken, fish, white pasta, banana, bread — the "white diet."

✅ Long-Term Maintenance Tips

💧Rinse with water immediately after consuming staining drinks
🥤Use a straw for coffee, tea, and cold drinks to minimise tooth contact
🦷Use a whitening toothpaste (not abrasive charcoal) for maintenance
🔬Professional clean every 6 months to remove surface staining before it sets
Annual top-up session (in-chair or home kit) keeps results looking fresh
🛡️Fluoride varnish post-whitening to remineralise enamel — we apply this at your visit
🚭Stop tobacco — the single biggest thing you can do for lasting whiteness

Frequently Asked

Everything you want to know about whitening.

Yes — professional teeth whitening is enamel-safe when performed or supervised by a dentist. The key distinction is between bleaching (which breaks down colour molecules inside enamel without removing tooth structure) and erosion (caused by acid in fizzy drinks and charcoal pastes). At Bite Dental we use clinically approved hydrogen peroxide concentrations, protect gum tissue with a dental dam, and apply desensitising gel before and after. Sensitivity, if it occurs, is temporary — typically resolving within 24–48 hours.
In-chair Zoom whitening results typically last 12–24 months with good maintenance. Home whitening kits last 6–12 months per course. Results depend significantly on diet and habits — avoiding or rinsing after tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco makes a major difference. An annual top-up session keeps results consistently bright. Your custom trays (from home kit) can be reused for years — just top up with fresh gel.
Most patients feel little to no discomfort during professional whitening. Some sensitivity is normal for 24–48 hours after treatment — teeth may feel more reactive to hot or cold. This is temporary and expected. We minimise it proactively: we apply potassium nitrate desensitising gel during and after treatment. Patients with pre-existing sensitivity are assessed beforehand and the protocol is adjusted accordingly. If you're concerned about sensitivity, tell us at the shade assessment — we'll design your treatment around it.
No — whitening agents only work on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, composite bonding, and tooth-coloured fillings will not change colour with any whitening treatment — professional or OTC. If you have restorations visible in your smile zone, they may need to be replaced after whitening to match your new, brighter natural teeth. We flag this clearly at the shade assessment consultation before you proceed, so there are no surprises.
In-chair Zoom whitening typically achieves 6–8 shades of improvement in a single 60-minute session. Home kits typically achieve 4–6 shades over a 2-week protocol. Individual results depend on the starting shade, the cause of discolouration, and your tooth structure. Yellow staining from tea, coffee, and tobacco responds best. Intrinsic grey or brown staining (from tetracycline antibiotics or fluorosis) may respond less dramatically — we'll be honest about realistic expectations at your consultation before you commit.
No — we don't recommend teeth whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There's no conclusive evidence of harm, but we follow the clinical precautionary principle: elective cosmetic procedures are postponed until after delivery and the cessation of breastfeeding. This is a universal guideline across all dental associations, not specific to our products or methods. We'll be happy to schedule a shade assessment during pregnancy and plan your whitening for after — the wait is worth it for peace of mind.
For the first 48 hours: stick to the "white diet" — avoid coffee, tea, red wine, berries, turmeric, beetroot, and tomato-based foods. After 48 hours, return to normal eating but try to rinse with water immediately after staining foods or drinks. Use a whitening toothpaste for daily maintenance (avoid abrasive charcoal pastes). Book a professional clean every 6 months. Consider an annual top-up whitening session. We apply fluoride varnish at the end of your whitening to remineralise enamel — this is included in your treatment.
