Emergency First Aid

What to do right now — before you reach us.

Tap each emergency type for immediate first-aid instructions. These steps can save your tooth or prevent worsening while you travel to our clinic.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root.
  • If dirty, rinse gently with clean water for 10 seconds — do NOT scrub or use soap.
  • If possible, gently reinsert the tooth back into the socket and hold it there.
  • If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in milk or hold it inside your cheek (between gum and cheek) in saliva.
  • Do NOT store the tooth in tap water or let it dry out.
  • Call or WhatsApp us immediately and head to the clinic at once.
⚡ Reimplantation success is highest within 30 minutes. After 60 minutes, the chances drop significantly. Do not delay.
  • Take OTC pain relief — ibuprofen (400mg) or paracetamol (500mg) as directed. Ibuprofen works better for dental infections.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water — this reduces inflammation and clears bacteria.
  • Apply a cold compress (ice wrapped in a cloth) on the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes at a time. Do not apply heat.
  • Do not poke or squeeze a pus-filled swelling — this can spread the infection.
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet food and drinks.
  • WhatsApp or call us immediately for a same-day appointment.
⚡ A dental abscess is an active infection. If you notice swelling spreading toward your jaw, neck, or below your eye — go to a hospital emergency immediately.
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area.
  • If the broken piece is large, try to save it and bring it with you — it may be usable.
  • Apply a cold compress outside your mouth if there's any swelling.
  • Cover sharp edges with sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax (available at pharmacies) to protect your cheek and tongue.
  • Take pain relief as needed — ibuprofen or paracetamol.
  • Avoid biting on that side. Book an appointment as soon as possible.
  • Find and keep the crown if possible — bring it to the appointment. We may be able to recement it.
  • If the exposed tooth is causing pain, apply a small amount of dental cement (available at pharmacies as "Dentemp" or similar) as a temporary cover.
  • Clove oil on a cotton pellet placed on the sensitive tooth can temporarily reduce pain.
  • Avoid chewing on that side and eating sticky or hard foods until you see us.
  • Book an appointment soon — an uncovered tooth decays quickly.
  • Fold a clean piece of gauze or a clean handkerchief into a thick pad and place it over the socket.
  • Bite down firmly and continuously for 30–45 minutes. Pressure is the key — don't keep removing the gauze to check.
  • Do not rinse vigorously, spit, or use a straw for the next 24 hours — this dislodges the clot.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and hot drinks for at least 24 hours.
  • If bleeding continues after 60 minutes of firm pressure, call us immediately.
⚡ If you are on blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel), bleeding may be harder to control — call us immediately.
  • Check for cuts to lips, cheeks, and tongue — apply firm pressure with a clean cloth to control bleeding.
  • Rinse mouth gently with cool water to assess the damage.
  • Check each tooth — are any loose? Chipped? Missing? Note what you find to tell us.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Take ibuprofen for pain.
  • Even if teeth look intact, root or jaw damage may not be visible — come in for a proper X-ray assessment.
  • If you suspect jaw fracture or significant head injury, go to A&E immediately.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face — 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
  • Take ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory) if you have no contraindications — do not take aspirin if there's any bleeding.
  • Stay hydrated and do not eat on the affected side.
  • Do not apply heat to the swelling — this can worsen it.
  • Book an emergency appointment immediately. Swelling due to infection can spread rapidly.
⚡ If swelling is spreading below your jaw, toward your neck, or affecting your breathing or swallowing — go to a hospital A&E immediately. This is a medical emergency.
  • If the wire is poking your cheek, try gently bending it back with a clean pencil eraser or cotton bud so it no longer sticks out.
  • Apply orthodontic wax (available at pharmacies) over the sharp end to protect soft tissue.
  • If a bracket has come off, it's not an emergency — but call us to arrange repair soon.
  • Do not cut the wire yourself with scissors — small pieces can be swallowed.
  • WhatsApp us with a photo and we'll advise whether you need a same-day visit or can wait.

Frequently Asked

Your questions answered.

A dental emergency is anything causing severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or risk of losing a tooth. This includes: intense toothache or abscess, broken or knocked-out tooth, facial/gum swelling, lost crown causing pain, uncontrolled post-extraction bleeding, or trauma to the mouth. If you're unsure — WhatsApp us. We'll tell you within minutes whether you need to come in today.
Yes — we keep emergency slots open at both clinics every day (Mon–Sat). WhatsApp +91 98106 64561, tell us what's happening, and we'll confirm your slot within minutes. For critical emergencies like a knocked-out tooth or spreading swelling, please contact us immediately as time really matters.
Our clinics are open Mon–Sat 10am–7pm. Outside these hours: WhatsApp us and we'll respond as soon as possible. For spreading facial swelling or breathing difficulty — go to a hospital A&E immediately, as this is a medical emergency beyond dental care. For pain management overnight: ibuprofen/paracetamol, a cold compress on the cheek, and avoid hot food. Contact us first thing the next morning for a same-day slot.
The emergency consultation is charged at our standard fee. Treatment cost depends on what's needed — recementation of a crown is very different in cost from a root canal. We always give you the full cost before starting any treatment. No surprises. 0% EMI is available for larger treatments. WhatsApp us to ask before you come in — we're happy to discuss costs in advance.
