Laminates (also called porcelain veneers) are thin ceramic shells fabricated in a lab and bonded to your teeth — they're thinner (0.2–0.5mm) and require minimal or no tooth reduction. Composite veneers are made of tooth-coloured resin built up directly on the tooth in the clinic, in a single visit. Laminates last longer (15–20 years), are more stain-resistant, and look more lifelike. Composite veneers are more affordable, reversible, and done in one appointment. No. The preparation process (if any) is done under local anaesthetic. For composite veneers, no anaesthetic is needed in most cases since no enamel is removed. After the procedure you may notice mild sensitivity for 24–48 hours — this is normal and resolves on its own. Many patients are surprised at how comfortable the whole experience is.
Composite veneers are fully reversible — they're added on top of your tooth with no enamel removed, and can be taken off at any time. Porcelain laminates require a very thin layer of enamel to be removed (usually 0.3–0.5mm), so they are considered a permanent restoration — once you have them, you'll always need some form of restoration on those teeth. That said, many ultra-thin laminate cases involve zero enamel removal. This is one of the first things we evaluate at consultation.
Porcelain laminates typically last 15–20 years with proper care. Composite veneers last 5–8 years before they may need polishing or replacement. Both can be extended with regular dental check-ups, using a night guard if you grind your teeth, and avoiding biting very hard foods with your front teeth. The quality of bonding technique and the ceramist's skill significantly affect longevity — which is why we use only qualified labs for our porcelain work.
